The Dutch organist Nico Blom (Gorinchem – 1964) attended his first music classes at the
age tof five. After eleven years of musical education at the Streekmuziekschool in Gorinchem,
he commenced his study at the Rotterdams Conservatorium at the age of eighteen where he
received his Organcertificate in 1989. Andre Verwoerd and Bernard Winsemius pertain to
Nico’s former teachers.

During a short period of time, Nico also studied choral and orchestral direction and ecclesial
music at Barend Schuurman’s and Arie van Beek’s. To ameliorate his conducting skills, Nico
several times attended the renowned Kurt Thomas Course.

He was twice winner of the Gorcum Organ Concours in the highest category.

On top of that, he has also worked as a music teacher at the Gymnasium Camphusianum in
Gorinchem and as a organ teacher at the Zeister Muziekschool.
From 1994 until 2009 Nico has conducted the Women’s Choir and the Mixed Choral Society
“Hosanna” in Boskoop.

Nico Blom is standing organist at the Johannes Church (PKN) in Gorinchem.
Besides, he has been organist at the Evangelic Lutheran Church, which is also situated in
Gorinchem, for many years. He regularly performs as an accompanist or as a soloist as well iat
home as abroad.

Either as a continuo player on continuo organ or harpsichord, or as a conductor, Nico was
involved in renditions of great oratorical pieces, like Handel’s “Messiah”, Faure’s “Requiem”,
Bach’s “Weihnachts Oratorium” or “Johannes Passion” and Vivaldi’s “Gloria”.
He also cooperated on the Dutch premiere of Benjamin Britten’s “Spirit of the World”.
Different professional orchestras, such as the Dordts Chamber Orchestra, the R B Orchestra
and the Chamber Orchestra Continuo provided their cooperation for these concerts.

Nico Blom has also been the standing concert organist of the City Boys Choir Gorcum.
With this boys choir Nico has recorded a few CD’s and has made an concert tour through
England in 2001 and 2003. During these tours he also gave organ recitals in Peterborough
and Cambridge.

During the fall of 2002, Nico was soloist of the Gorcum Chamber Orchestra for the
renditions of Haydn’s and Handel’s organ concerts. In 2005-2006, Nico was concert organist
at the Men’s Vocal Ensemble “CounTeBas” in Gorinchem, with who he has realised several
television transmissions. Since spring 2007, Nico has been the concert organist for the
Chamber Choir ‘Voce Anglica’ (with Jeroen Bal as conductor).

Since 2007 Nico Blom has formed a professional duo with pianist Olga Malkina, originating
from Russia, focussing on the unique combination of piano and organ.
The duo, named "Vierhandig" ("Four Hands"), has given many concerts in the Netherlands.
Their CD, “Un Sospiro” (Boskoop 2004 – Mirasound Amersfoort), was elaborately praised by
the press. In 2007 this CD has been ranked first in TROS’ Classical Radio Top 50
for several weeks.

Certainly, their successful performance in the Main Hall of the Concertgebouw (februari 2007)
in Amsterdam should not remain unmentioned.

A solo CD recorded by Nico couldn’t stay off, and that is why his 2007 organ CD “Synesthesia”
was released. On this CD recorded, you will find a four hundred year anthology of the organ.
The recordings contain the sounds of the world famous Hinsz organ in the Bovenkerk in
Kampen, Holland. In internationally acknowledged professional magazines praising reviews
about this CD have emerged.
Nico and Olga's latest Four Hands CD, called "New Transcriptions on Piano and Organ" was
recorded in the Buurkerk in Utrecht - The Netherlands and has been released early 2010.
“Synesthesia” , the previously mentioned “Un Sospiro” and their latest CD are internationally
available for purchase (see “DISCOGRAPHY”).

Besides his activities as a piano and organ pedagogue, Nico is also active as a composer.
Already several vocal and instrumental compositions written by Nico have yet been published.
